Dear Readers:
After an eight year hiatus, we are re-launching The Public Purse blog. The timing is right to reflect on conditions eight years ago when the private sector was beginning to recover from the recession while the public sector was in full tailspin. We plan to examine what’s changed, what hasn’t and what might change in the future. We expect to (mainly) stick with some of the same core themes: state and local fiscal condition; public pensions; natural (and unnatural) disasters; fiscal stress and bankruptcy; taxes, taxpayers and the economy. We are leaving some of the posts from “then” on the site for the historically curious. In Illinois, for example, some has changed, but much has not. Our Detroit posting was bit providential, but happily the city is on the better side of bankruptcy and we cheer its nascent recovery.
